Ever wonder what a short order cook in a monster world might look like? Whatever you do, DO NOT order the hash.

Today’s monster of the day is a little dinosaur taken right from my sketchbook. I thought I’d leave some of the other miscellaneous critters around him so you can get a sense of what a page in my sketchbook might contain. Usually it’s where I get out a lot of bad drawings hoping to nail that one good one. This little guy just kind of leapt off the page.
Welcome to the FIRST DAY of Monster Month here on the Chad Frye • Illustration Guy blog!
To kick off the event, the monster of the day today is none other than ME ! It only seemed fair that I set the example to all the monsters to follow in the days to come.
“Why monsters?” you ask? Earlier this year I got caught up in creating an illustratiton of Frankenstein’s monster in a Mona Lisa setting, and I just caught the bug. Ever since then I’ve been doodling monsters. If you click on the Monsters category on the blog home page, you’ll be able to see other monsters that currently reside on the blog.
So for now, strap yourselves in, and get ready as we unveil a fun month of hairy beasts and creepy eyes! Hope you enjoy them as much as I did drawing them!
Hopefully you don’t store your computer under your bed, for if you do, you will find a frightening scourge of MONSTERS under there during the month of October. Yes, that’s right – Chad Frye • Illustration Guy announces that from October 1st through October 31, it will be officially MONSTER MONTH on the ‘ol blog!
So, what does this mean exactly? It means that every day in the month of October a new drawing, sketch, or even painting of a monster will be showcased here on the blog. Some may be frightening, some silly, others just weird. But all will be fun!
Also, at some point during October in conjunction with MONSTER MONTH, a NEW CONTEST will be announced on the Chad Frye • Illustration Guy Fan Page on Facebook. If you are a Facebook user, be sure to join the Fan Page so you can have a crack at the contests held there where signed books and real live drawings have been given away! Click HERE to see the Fan Page.
So, hopefully you have stocked up on night light bulbs, because beginning TOMORROW the blog will be inundated with MONSTERS!
For those of you who will be in the LA area this weekend, I wanted to let you know about an art show that opens on Saturday, September 19.
A few months back, I shared with you here on the blog my step-by-step process in the creation of a Where the Wild Things Are (the children’s book by Maurice Sendak) tribute illustration. I created that painting for TerribleYellowEyes.com, a website put together by illustrator Cory Godbey to celebrate Mr. Sendak’s brilliant book. Cory has continued to compile a wonderful selection of art for his website by artists from all over the world.
Cory’s website caught the attention of the folks at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, California. They selected a nice array of art and will be opening a show and sale of the art this weekend which will run through October 6. Cory (whose work you can see in the latest Flight 6 graphic novel anthology) will be flying out from his home in South Carolina for the show. Some of the other participating artists will also be in attendance.
While my piece was not among those selected for the show, I’ll be there Saturday night as well to take in some great art! Come get swept away by your childhood imagination!
The other day as I sat at my desk, I had the inspiration to doodle another Frankenstein head. True, I explored a few approaches to this character which I chronicled in detail here on this blog, but the possibilities are endless, and my fascination continues. Frankie just couldn’t be contained.
So I grabbed some scrap paper, and with a brown ink line and some quick, well-placed brush strokes of watercolor paint, this little guy has come to life!

Sometimes when I open the pages of my sketchbook, I start the pencil down on one part of the page not sure of what is about to come out. In this case, it started with the head of the big guy, and the imagination just kept wandering from that point. Eventually added the little creature in his shadow, and put a more final line on everything with a brush pen and some other tech pens.
Thanks for following along with my progression reports on my Where the Wild Things Are tribute illustration. After seeing all about how this painting was created, now is the time for the grand unveiling of the final. So, without further ado, please visit TerribleYellowEyes.com right now where the final illustration now resides.
If you would like to go back and see the other posts that led to this moment, feel free to do a search for “Wild Thing” here on the ol’ blog.
And as an added bonus, below are a few photos of my working environment during the production of this illustration. Enjoy!
If you are a fellow Facebook enthusiast, I invite you to come on over and join my Fan Page there. My blog posts are regularly updated there, and from time to time I run contests from there with real, genuine, non-virtual prizes. I’m planning to get a new contest started within the next week or so and would love to have you come be a part of it.
