THEY SAY SKETCHBOOKS ARE WHERE YOU WORK OUT ALL THE BAD DRAWINGS. YOU BE THE JUDGE.

Aquaqueen
Colored Pencil
I never quite know what will come forth when I stare at a blank page in my sketchbook. On this particular day, it was an aquaqueen with her minion octopus.

Birthday Monster

This was a birthday card I made for my brother a few years ago. The monster came complete with a gift-wrapped tongue.

Batman’s Milk
Digital
My little nephew was refusing to drink his milk. Knowing he loved Batman, my sister asked if I could draw a picture of Batman drinking his milk to inspire the little one to do likewise. So, I whipped this up for them, and sure enough, it worked! If Batman would drink his milk to get big and strong, so would my nephew!

Frankenstein’s Monster
Colored Pencil
Inspired by the tragic friendship of the Monster with a little girl as I remember it from Boris Karloff’s famous movie, this colored pencil drawing spilled forth on the pages of my sketchbook.

Tourists
Ink, watercolor & gouache
It’s always fun to travel and see new places. It’s just not always good to appear to be obviously unfamiliar with that new place, especially when the locals look…….hungry.

The Barber Shop
Ink
I think we discovered the primary reason that barbers don’t sing in their shops anymore.

Elephant Umbrella
Ink, watercolor & gouache
Raindrops keep falling on his head. That’s mostly because it is HARD for an elephant to find an appropriately-sized umbrella.

Bugs Bunny
Pencil
The Looney Tunes were my Saturday morning breakfast of choice while growing up. They were just so stinkin’ funny. What a treat it was years later as an animation pro to have a great one-on-one chat with Chuck Jones for about fifteen minutes. The Saturday morning kid in me had his mind blown that day.

The Square Dance
Pencil
“Swing your partner round and round, kick ‘em in the knees and throw ‘em to the ground!”
Wait, that can’t be right.

The Fox
Ink & digital
A fox meandered into the pages of my sketchbook. Sure hope he doesn’t find the page of chickens.

Mickey Mouse
Pencil
Having first grown up on Disney comic books, and then having worked on the show Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, ol’ Mickey has shown up in my sketches a LOT over the course of my life. He is always such a joy to doodle, evidenced by the many smiles I get from children when I do one for them no matter where they are from. I was in Russia drawing Mickey for a child one time, and as the drawing started getting recognizable, the kid got real excited. I heard through translation that he said, “Oh! It’s the REAL Mickey!”

Red Dragon
Pencil
No, this is NOT about Hannibal Lecter. This Red Dragon is literally a dragon drawn with a red pencil, complete with drool.

The Influencer
Ink, watercolor & gouache
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

Robots Sketch Cards
Mixed media
Anyone remember the movie Robots released by Fox? (I think these days Disney owns the movie.) Obi-Wan’s Ewan McGregor was the lead character, along with others like Robin Williams, Mel Brooks, & Halle Berry. Back when it was first coming out, I was hired by Inkworks trading cards to create over 500 sketch cards that would be randomly inserted into packs of images from the film. I kid you not, I had two weeks to draw all of them. As a result, only a few were in color – it was all about quantity. Not knowing anything about the story of the movie, though, they let us get creative, so I ended up doing some parody cards. That parody of the Star Wars poster you see was the highest selling Robots card by any of the sketch artists on eBay for $385 I think. I was paid $3 to draw it. Good times.
