Respectable Reptile

After three caricature posts in a row, perhaps it is time to return to the animal world. How about this Respectable Reptile?

A little over a week ago I saw the original 1960s Doctor Dolittle on the big screen (Rex Harrison was the star – not Eddie Murphy), and came away with animals on the brain. This dapper fella is a hand-inked specimen that came forth in my sketchbook, then colored in Photoshop.

Don’t get too close, or he may be puttin’ you on the Ritz cracker.

By the way, if you ever wondered what John Hammond from Jurassic Park looked like singing and dancing, do yourself a favor and check out that 50-year-old version of Doctor Dolittle. He’s the circus ringmaster. You’re welcome.

One of the highlights of the screening I went to was that the author of the screenplay and writer of the songs for the movie, the legendary Leslie Bricusse, was there for a Q&A along with Samantha Eggar, one of the stars of the film. It was so great to hear their tales from this film they spent a year making oh so long ago. Below is my favorite photo of the two of them that I took that day. What a treat!

Pygmy Pachyderms

The other day I needed a little repair to my car, so I took a sketchbook with me to the waiting room. Who knows why such a scene came to mind in that moment, but it did. These pygmy pachyderms came out of my pencil at the shop, and then finished with a little ink and paint in the studio.

So weird.

Never tick off creatures who never forget and carry a spear.

BING!

Honey Bear

Last night I was watching President Trump’s first State of the Union speech. If you think I’m going to start making political statements, then you have another think coming! Nah, I just watched it for the sake of wondering what was going to be said, and it gave me the opportunity to sketch this here honey bear!

With my trusty Prismacolor 03 sized ink pen, I went to town sketching this bear in my Strathmore sketchbook, and rendering all his fur while my ears listened to words, applause, words, applause, words – you get the idea. I pretended that each time I got a small section of fur drawn, all that applause was for me. How nice of Congress to appreciate my work like that.

Looks appetizing, but I do NOT recommend licking the honey from your screen.

Sailor Cat

Doodled a li’l ol’ sailor cat in my sketchbook this week. I wonder what it must be like to sail the seven seas with nine lives? (Rimshot anyone?)

It is not wise to be a pirate mouse when around a sailor cat.

Doggone

Couldn’t sleep much last night. Unwillingly awake at 4am, so naturally, I got up and drew some dogs. Yeah, I am the one in the middle, but by midday I’ll probably feel like all the outlining ones.

…because it’s 4am somewhere.

Happy New Year!

Now, you are probably wondering what sketches of lions, Darth Vader, and a dinosaur have in common with each other for a New Year’s post. They happen to be my final sketches for 2017, and they were all done this past weekend for my little nephews at their request – except for the dinosaur. The one year old can’t talk yet, but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t disappointed with ol’ Uncle Chad’s choice.

Aw – look at that mommy tasting her young.
The Force was so strong with this one, that you can see him bleeding through the lion picture.
Without looking at any reference material, I’m pretty sure this is scientifically accurate.

While I generally remain positive here on the ol’ blog, 2017 is a year that I’d rather forget. I’m sure you’ve all had a year or two like that. I just keep drawing and painting, and looking to the Bible for sage wisdom with life’s tough stuff.

So, here’s to the new year where hopefully the sketches get better, as well as the life experiences!

Merry Christmas 2017

Merry Christmas to one and all!

As you enjoy time with friends and family today, remember that in the spirit of giving, it isn’t always the gift that matters, but the thought behind it. So even if you are a snowman who is given a pair of swim trunks, remember the wisdom of I Thessalonians 5:18 which says, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

After all, today is the day we celebrate Christ’s coming into the world whose gift to us was His own self-sacrifice in dying for the sins of those who are willing to accept his gift (John 3:16).

Despite the musical enthusiasm of Olaf, not every snowman dreams of summer.
