Clubhouse Magazine: Fancy Lad

Earlier this year, I received an assignment from Clubhouse Magazine, a magazine for kids published by Focus on the Family. They wanted a boy exercising the old school activity of writing a physical letter to help advertise Clubhouse‘s summer pen pal program for kids!

So, a little watercolor paint and colored pencil later, here it is as seen on the back cover of the May 2020 issue of the magazine, then my own scan of the original art.

This is the art as it appears on the back cover.

A scan of the original art.

Peggy Lee’s 100th

Today is the 100th birthday of the late torch singer Peggy Lee. Not only was she the voice of Peg, the Siamese cats, and Darling in Disney’s original animated Lady & the Tramp, but she co-wrote all the songs!

I had a short fling myself with Lady & the Tramp some years ago. I drew an official coloring book based on the movie before ever entering the animation business in Hollywood. It’s been a while since drawing these characters, but it was fun to revisit them in my sketchbook. They are such appealing designs, and so wonderfully animated in the 1955 original film. It’s no wonder that beautiful film lives on in the hearts of each new generation that comes along.

While Ms. Lee had a long career as a songstress, it is certainly her work with Lady & the Tramp that ensures her legacy.

No bones about it, 100 is OLD!

Drawn & Quoted: Mad Scientist

“Gee, Brain, what are we gonna do tonight?”

“The same thing we do every night, try to take over the world!”

– Pinky and The Brain (1993 – 1998)

It’s hard to take over the world when your evil lab is overrun with evil cats.

What’s truly evil is that they refuse to use the litter box.

Bear Country

Well, at least it’s bear country on THIS page of my sketchbook. Grabbed a colored pencil, and once again explored one of the most fun animals to anthropomorphize.

This is what a good solid hour of doodling can produce.

Close enough you can almost smell their breath.

Green Masks & Ham

Some do find it undesirous

To wear masks for Coronavirus,

While other breathers it may seem,

Really like them when they’re green.

The Chickeraffe approves.

Secretary’s Day

Here in the States it is Secretary’s Day, or as the more politically correct term seems to be, Administrative Professionals Day. From what I have observed on those times I’ve worked at an office on this day, it’s a day when secretaries and assistants either get a free lunch or a Starbucks gift card.

So happy free lunch day all you secretaries and assistants! For many of you in quarantine, that probably just means you get to make yourself a sandwich.

Corporate culture can be a beast.

Dino Distancing

Yeah, dinosaurs like to snack on tender morsels of man meat, but this caveman isn’t having any of it. In this age of Coronavirus, the dino needs to stand at least six feet away, which may or may not cramp his lunch leanings.

Not to mention, that drooling is DEFINITELY NOT sanitary.

Hey hey hey! Stand over there!

Wednesday Wave

Just a little Wednesday wave to you from little ol’ Goofy. No shaking hands (cough cough) – just a wave.

And while you’re at it, wave “see ya’ later” to the tax day deadline. It’s been delayed due to the ill factor!

Every dog has his day. Goofy’s is Wednesday.
