GOOOOOOOOAL!

When I was a kid, I LOVED playing soccer. I played in a league in our town, and really enjoyed the game. My love for the game changed when I aged up into the next group, and found myself to be one of the youngest players in that level, and I was paired with a team that had a few bullies on it.

My own teammates soured me on the whole sport, when during practice, I had kicked the ball in a scrimmage setting, and it hit one of these bullies in the face. After practice that day, I got the stuffing knocked out of me as I was trying to unlock my bike from the bike rack. I didn’t quit the season because I don’t quit my commitments, but after that year, I never played in town leagues again.

I enjoy the nostalgia of having played, and the feeling of exhaustion at the end of a game. It sure was fun. So, I recently had some doodle time, and decided to do a little drawing more in line with what we do in storyboarding for animation – drawings full of action and interesting camera angles!

Happy Ending

Today is my last day at Warner Bros. Animation. For the past year, I’ve been proud to be a part of the story team on Green Eggs & Ham that will be unveiled on Netflix sometime in the fall.

It has been a thrill to work on this show, especially since the book of that same title was my favorite Dr. Seuss book when I was growing up. I remember my mother even making for me green eggs and ham for breakfast one day. Ended up that I didn’t like them, Sam I am. My little brain thought the eggs tasted like spinach.

Netflix hasn’t revealed too much about the show, so I’m not at liberty to do any Green Eggs specific art. Since that is the case, it seemed appropriate to commemorate my dear departure from WB in a more Looney Tunes worthy manner – why not go out in style a la What’s Opera Doc?

To paraphrase Bugs in the original cartoon, “Well, what did you expect in animation? A happy ending?”

Later Alligator Waiter

There’s just something about an alligator that makes me think he can be a dapper waiter, serving up a delectable dish to his deserving customers.

That reminds me, today is Memorial Day here in the States. Anyone planning a BBQ?

May the 4th

“Muuaaaaggrrrrrrr!” Which means, “May the 4th be with you.”
I always admired Chewbacca’s articulation.
 
And yes, today’s doodle is in honor of the passing of Peter Mayhew this week – the man behind the Chewbacca mask. I did meet him several times over the years at various fan conventions where I was surprised that he spoke English, and not just Wookiese.

Got Milk?

My sister reached out to me last week, and told me that her two-year-old wants to be Batman, but he refuses to drink his milk. She told him that Batman could only be big and strong because he drank HIS milk. My nephew didn’t believe her.

Hoping this visual helps him understand that even superheroes need their calcium.

 

It’s cow milk. Not sure how long it would take to milk enough bats to fill a glass.

Boy’s Best Friend

I never had a real pet when I was a kid, unless you count goldfish won at a fair, or hermit crabs. Those kind of pets you can’t really play with. I learned the hard way that they don’t play fetch very well.

It’s always fun to see a kid enjoying a pet, and the pet enjoying a kid. It’s kind of a carefree moment that let’s you forget the worries of the world.

 

Of course, now the kid has dog spit all over his face.

Lion & the Mouse

I was doodling around in Photoshop the other day, and started sketching a lion, which led to me remembering that old Aesop’s Fable of the mouse who freed the lion from a trap, and they became buddies.

One thing led to another, and the doodle became a digital illustration just for the fun of it. Why not, right?

 

Wildlife can be so friendly when drawn as a cartoon.

Space Jammin’

News broke not too long ago that a new Space Jam movie was in the works, this time featuring Laker’s great LeBron James. A search online says they are shooting now, and the film is due to come out in 2021. All that animation is going to take some time for sure!

A couple of friends recently went to go work on the film, which make me wonder what it might be like for LeBron working with legendary actors such as Bugs Bunny. LeBron has acted a few times, but this might be his biggest role yet. Bugs might have to give him a few tips on how to be a movie star.

No word yet on the title of the movie. Hoping it’s not Space Jam 2: Electric Boogaloo.
