Dino Dentist

Perhaps it’s just me, but I thought the two T-Rexes in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom looked super fake. See for yourself…

I do dino impressions. This one is of a T-Rex mime trapped in an invisible iceberg.

In actuality, the dinosaur behind me made an appearance in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure many years ago. It is one of the Cabazon Dinosaurs out by Palm Springs which is part of a creation museum. If you go there, tell ’em Large Marge sent you.

I got to thinking about how silly that ol’ photo was, that another silly dino joke came to mind, so I sketched it up when there was a little window of free time.

Tiny arms make it impossible to floss.

Unexpected Encouragement

Got out the ol’ sketchbook the other day and felt like getting a monster out of my brush pen – a monster who might have had a tough day at the office, and was cheered just a smidge by a bird who lit upon his nose.

Happy Monday.

Well, it’s less embarrassing than a zit on your nose, right?

Monstrous Birthday Card

I recently attended the birthday party of a grown-up friend of mine who is quite the collector of things. What do you get such a person who probably already has most of the cool stuff out there? You make them their own custom birthday card, with added extra credit for making it monstrous.

So, here’s a card starring Frankenstein’s monster and his irrational fear of flame.

Fire also bad for paper cards.

May the Fourth

Today is Star Wars day. May the Fourth be with you.

Considering most of the Star Wars and Marvel movies are animated and owned by Disney, would be nice if an actual Disney animated movie could set a new box office record.

Fire-Breathing Sketches

I finished up a sketchbook the other day with a page full of dragons. Sure hope they are housebroken.

Hopefully they aren’t fire-breathing dragons. Fire does NOT go well with paper.

Voyage LA Magazine Article

It isn’t every day you wake up and see nice things written about you in the press, but this week I had such a day.

Several weeks ago, online magazine Voyage LA interviewed me for an article about…me! And this week it became available for all to see.

This is my home studio as taken by Greg Preston for his “The Artist Within 2” book. That’s my great desk formerly located in the Disney Animation building upon which backgrounds were designed for many films. (Click on it to enlarge.)

It’s always slightly uncomfortable talking about oneself in this context. I love what I do for a living, and look forward to each new opportunity that comes my way to dissect the visual need, and come up with ideas and art to make those needs just right for clients. But to talk about oneself? You have to apply the brakes to sit here and contemplate who you are as an artist and put that into words.

Still, it is fun to show some art, and to reminisce about moments like the one below from my childhood.

Yeah, that’s me on the left with my brother and the famous singing cowboy from the movies – Roy Rogers. Click on the picture to read all about that story!

Respectable Reptile

After three caricature posts in a row, perhaps it is time to return to the animal world. How about this Respectable Reptile?

A little over a week ago I saw the original 1960s Doctor Dolittle on the big screen (Rex Harrison was the star – not Eddie Murphy), and came away with animals on the brain. This dapper fella is a hand-inked specimen that came forth in my sketchbook, then colored in Photoshop.

Don’t get too close, or he may be puttin’ you on the Ritz cracker.

By the way, if you ever wondered what John Hammond from Jurassic Park looked like singing and dancing, do yourself a favor and check out that 50-year-old version of Doctor Dolittle. He’s the circus ringmaster. You’re welcome.

One of the highlights of the screening I went to was that the author of the screenplay and writer of the songs for the movie, the legendary Leslie Bricusse, was there for a Q&A along with Samantha Eggar, one of the stars of the film. It was so great to hear their tales from this film they spent a year making oh so long ago. Below is my favorite photo of the two of them that I took that day. What a treat!

2017 Monster Month: Day 22 – Coming & Going

Beware the fire “breathing” dragon that is dangerous both as he comes and as he goes, so to speak.

If that was the bluebird of happiness, we’re in trouble.

And thus concludes Monster Month for 2017. Twenty-two beasties from my drafting table to your eyes. I hope you enjoyed them once again. These are always fun for me to draw, and almost all were drawn just for fun.

As always, I am available to be hired should you have a project requiring my abilities, whether it is a monster or something else. There is plenty of variety of subject matter on my blog, and also over on Instagram where I post regularly, too! I’m chadfrye_illustrationguy over there.

I can be reached at chad@chadfrye.com with serious inquiries. I have illustrated children’s books, magazine articles, and regularly work in animation as a character designer and storyboard artist.
