The other night as I was watching television, I grabbed my sketchbook and just started doodling. I suppose that I wasn’t really paying too much attention to what was on the screen because I started to draw Vikings. There aren’t too many Viking TV shows on these days unless Law & Order sneaked in a new version of their show – Law & Order: The Norse Files. However, about a month ago I saw the brilliant Dreamworks animated movie How To Train Your Dragon, so maybe some thoughts of that lingered in my brain. This one guy emerged from my pencil, and begged to be drawn a little more formally. Over to the drafting table we went where he was fully realized.

But after all that – for some reason, all I could think of while doing the final drawing was Elmer Fudd singing “spear and magic helmet.”

“It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.”

– J.R.R. Tolkien (1892 – 1973)

As I continue to add creations to my sketchbook, various beasts and creatures continue to come forth. This dragon oozed out of my pencil unexpectedly with that mean, hungry and determined expression. Decided the sweet little bird would be the focus of his attention. It’s never any fun being the prey.  All you can hope for is to choke the aggressor.

This past summer I was riding the red trolley in San Diego when this lady struggled onto the train. She had a bit of a sad persona about her – everything about her drooped. That may sound funny, but she really was quite a sympathetic character. She made so much of an impression on me that I did this drawing of her two days later.

Drawn & Quoted: Dancin’ Tony

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.  Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”

– Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)

A few months ago in a mental stupor, I was channel surfing the television. When my remote landed on an episode of America’s Got Talent, this fella happened to be on screen. He was an older gentleman, perhaps in his 70s, that just started wiggin’ out to disco music. He was truly a sight to behold, particularly with an I-can’t-believe-it expression on my face – not because he was the best disco dancer to ever boogie, mind you, but because he was a spectacle. After his segment was over, I instantly grabbed my sketchbook and did this drawing of the fella from memory.

A friend is very different from an acquaintance. The former is tried and true; the latter only a casual shadow in one’s life.”

Sometimes when I open the pages of my sketchbook, I start the pencil down on one part of the page not sure of what is about to come out. In this case, it started with the head of the big guy, and the imagination just kept wandering from that point. Eventually added the little creature in his shadow, and put a more final line on everything with a brush pen and some other tech pens.

Drawn & Quoted: The Eagle Scout

“The one effective method of defending one’s own territory from an offensive by air is to destroy the enemy’s air power with the greatest possible speed.”

– Italian General Giulio Douhet (1869-1930)

Well, this is the first time Drawn & Quoted has featured a full color sketch. It is actually a piece I did as a gift for a friend this past week. Sean Sturrock is a teenager I know who was just inducted into the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts last Saturday. I have been friends with his parents, Beth and Walt Sturrock for twenty years. It has been neat to see Sean go from birth to Eagle Scout. Of course, as a long-term friend, it was my obligation to poke a little fun at his fantastic achievement! Congratulations to Sean, and to his family including sister, Emily!

“The point of living and of being an optimist, is to be foolish enough to believe the best is yet to come.”
