May the Fourth

Today is Star Wars day. May the Fourth be with you.

Considering most of the Star Wars and Marvel movies are animated and owned by Disney, would be nice if an actual Disney animated movie could set a new box office record.

Drawn & Quoted: Successful Failure

“Success is most often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable.

– Coco Chanel (1883-1971)

The bear’s success comes at the price of the fish’s unknowing leap of failure. Perhaps not the intent of the quote, but certainly a truth from it.

Sometimes when I do these Drawn & Quoted pieces, I find a quote and do a drawing based on it. This time the drawing came first (ink in my sketchbook), then the search for a matching quote came after, which is usually the tougher way to go about it. I saw this image as having possible business applications, and started looking at quotes with that in mind. I also thoroughly enjoy utter silliness, so when this quote surfaced (pun intended), it made me laugh in the context of the drawing.

Why? Because the quote probably was meant to inspire someone to greatness by having them not be afraid to try something. However, it seemed to fit perfectly the goals and achievements of these two characters as they both attempted their goals in tandem. The bear achieved success at the price of the fish’s failure. Funny, right? Pain is often funny.

Merry Christmas 2017

Merry Christmas to one and all!

As you enjoy time with friends and family today, remember that in the spirit of giving, it isn’t always the gift that matters, but the thought behind it. So even if you are a snowman who is given a pair of swim trunks, remember the wisdom of I Thessalonians 5:18 which says, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

After all, today is the day we celebrate Christ’s coming into the world whose gift to us was His own self-sacrifice in dying for the sins of those who are willing to accept his gift (John 3:16).

Despite the musical enthusiasm of Olaf, not every snowman dreams of summer.

2017 Monster Month: Day 20 – The Job Interview

You know those job interviews where the interviewer can just tell by looking at the applicant that they wouldn’t be a good fit in their office environment? Yeah, this is THAT guy.

It just seemed funny to me that this monster thinks he is being turned down for his tattoo, when really it is likely due to the fact that he won’t be able to fit into a cubical, or control his oral excretions.

There’s also probably several folks whose dander allergies would be set off working side-by-side with Norman. (He just looks like a Norman, doesn’t he?) Anyway, he was accomplished traditionally in ink, watercolor, and gouache paint.

Human Resources – HUMAN. Not Monster Resources.

2017 Monster Month: Day 15 – eHarm.com

Everybody deserves a little love, right? How would a zombie really find his match online? No human is going to trust him, of course. They’d go out for dinner and one would come back without any brains. So, zombies really need their own online dating service.

Introducing E-Harm.com, where monsters can safely find a mate compatible to their lifestyle.

After the effort of making a dating website page for good ol’ Don here, it seemed a shame to not let you see him a little closer. He’s good looking, has a decent job, and is into small pets – or are they into him as it were? So here he is…

Now who wouldn’t fall in love with a face like that?

2017 Monster Month: Day 8 – Hay Fever

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if The Blob had to sneeze?

Here’s the answer accomplished in gouache on black paper…

I wonder if he covered his mouth?

2017 Monster Month: Day 6 – Humidity

What is that they say? “It’s not the heat, but the humidity.”

Just imagine you are standing there talking with a friend and all of a sudden it just gets REALLY humid out. Then imagine that the humidity isn’t caused by the weather. Yowza!

Today’s monsters are brought to you by watercolors and colored pencils.

I’d also wager that he needs a really big breath mint.

2017 Monster Month: Day 5 – Illegal Alien

I sometimes wonder what it would be like if aliens invaded the old west of America. Yeah, yeah, I know there was a movie called Cowboys & Aliens which was a fascinating version of how things could have gone, but I require just a little bit more silly in something like that. Silly as in, “What would a gunfight look like where one is armed with four arms?”

Perhaps this is how it would have gone down, by way of ink and gouache on tan paper…

If a bandito with four arms challenges you to a duel, politely decline.
