Happy Ending

Today is my last day at Warner Bros. Animation. For the past year, I’ve been proud to be a part of the story team on Green Eggs & Ham that will be unveiled on Netflix sometime in the fall.

It has been a thrill to work on this show, especially since the book of that same title was my favorite Dr. Seuss book when I was growing up. I remember my mother even making for me green eggs and ham for breakfast one day. Ended up that I didn’t like them, Sam I am. My little brain thought the eggs tasted like spinach.

Netflix hasn’t revealed too much about the show, so I’m not at liberty to do any Green Eggs specific art. Since that is the case, it seemed appropriate to commemorate my dear departure from WB in a more Looney Tunes worthy manner – why not go out in style a la What’s Opera Doc?

To paraphrase Bugs in the original cartoon, “Well, what did you expect in animation? A happy ending?”

Drawn & Quoted: Bears & the Bees

“Survival starts by paying attention to what is close at hand and immediate. To look out with idle hope is tantamount to dreaming one’s life away.

– Yann Martel (1963 – present)

Bears do love their honey. I love doing drawings in my toned tan paper sketchbook. Win-win.

May the 4th

“Muuaaaaggrrrrrrr!” Which means, “May the 4th be with you.”
I always admired Chewbacca’s articulation.

And yes, today’s doodle is in honor of the passing of Peter Mayhew this week – the man behind the Chewbacca mask. I did meet him several times over the years at various fan conventions where I was surprised that he spoke English, and not just Wookiese.

Paddington 2 – Part 4

Here is the final illustration I created for an unreleased special feature for the Paddington 2 Blu-ray, and it just so happens to be my favorite of the project.

This piece reminds me of an old Sunday school song I used to sing as a little kid “Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world…” which was itself inspired by Matthew 19:14 in the Bible, “but Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.'” This is kind of appropriate considering that in just this past week was Good Friday and Easter, the time of year traditionally honored by Christians as the day Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for mankind, and lived again for us to tell about it.

Note to self: don’t put the earth in the dryer after washing, lest it shrink.

Hope that you have enjoyed seeing, this past week, my previously unrevealed set of drawings created for the Paddington 2 project. My sincere thanks to Constantine Nasr, the producer of those special features, for inviting me to be a part of it. It was a great project of which to be a part.

Got Milk?

My sister reached out to me last week, and told me that her two-year-old wants to be Batman, but he refuses to drink his milk. She told him that Batman could only be big and strong because he drank HIS milk. My nephew didn’t believe her.

Hoping this visual helps him understand that even superheroes need their calcium.

It’s cow milk. Not sure how long it would take to milk enough bats to fill a glass.

Lion & the Mouse

I was doodling around in Photoshop the other day, and started sketching a lion, which led to me remembering that old Aesop’s Fable of the mouse who freed the lion from a trap, and they became buddies.

One thing led to another, and the doodle became a digital illustration just for the fun of it. Why not, right?

Wildlife can be so friendly when drawn as a cartoon.

Dragon Boy

Dragons can sure be intimidating, but some lads are either too brave or too stupid to be bothered with intimidations.

It’s not polite to stick your tongue out at someone.

Bus Stop Bear

Hope he has success in getting the bus to stop. That morning commute can be a bear.
