2014 Monster Month: Day 6 – The Swimmer

Now of course there are sea monsters, but then there are monsters who just love the sea.

The latter of these two monster types may have an infatuation with the water, but it does not mean that they are adept at traversing it. Some may float upon the water’s gentle ripples, while others have the body density to sink them to the bottom like a wheelbarrow full of rocks. Unless you are a monster who completely understands your limits within the liquids of this earth, it is highly recommended that you proceed with caution such as this swimmer.

Also, be sure to wait an hour after eating someone before going in the water.

No matter how you look in your bathing suit, be sure to look confident.

Keep your beach towel handy for tomorrow’s monster as well. It might get a little sloppy!

2014 Monster Month: Day 5 – Purple Non-People Eater

Today comes a purple creature from the depths of my sketchbook. He doesn’t really care one way or the other about things. He minds his own business, keeps his teeth clean, and combs his beard once a week whether or not it needs it. Just your average, run-of-the-mill purple monster.

purple people eater
Despite his purple color, this critter is not a people eater – mostly because it would take too much effort since they are so boney.

2014 Monster Month: Day 4 – Cave Bug

We’re gonna need a bigger can of bug spray for this one. Happy Monday.

2014 Monster Month: Day 3 – Blue Speckled Beast

To be clear, she is blue, and she is speckled, but she does not have blue speckles. And yes, she is a she. The eyelashes give it away.

Angry Monster
If you want to live, don’t make a big deal about her nose freckles (even though I think they are kind of cute).

More Monster Month on Monday!

2014 Monster Month: Day 2 – Fang Fish Face

Ah yes, the ol’ FFF creature. I think this one was inspired by my 5:30am wake-up routine while I was employed earlier this year. I would get up at 5:30 to beat the rush hour traffic on the long commute to the animation studio I was working at all to avoid looking like yesterday’s monster on a daily basis. Guess I traded yesterday’s look for today’s with the lack of sleep I was getting. Here’s hoping my next animation gig is closer to home!

Whatever the inspiration, hopefully you look better than this in your morning mirror!

A lack of personal hygiene seems to be a recurring theme with monsters. Maybe this guy at least eats breath mints.

One more monster is coming your way tomorrow to finish out this week!

2014 Monster Month: Day 1 – Monstrum Artificem

…otherwise known as “Monster Artist”. (Yes, I invoked the language of Latin in an effort to sound smart. Did it work?)

Welcome to the first of the new images for 2014’s MONSTER MONTH! Following the tradition of past years, our first selection of the month is a self-portrait. I don’t often take this form in my day-to-day life – unless I am driving on California freeways. Then this is the form that my Jekyl & Hyde personality takes on.

Artist Portrait
The thing that makes this most disturbing is that I am not wearing any clothes.

Come back again tomorrow and each weekday in October to see more illustrated creatures from my twisted mind.

Burbank Bulldogs Water Polo

Last year I was approached to create a one-of-a-kind design for the back of the letterman jacket for a member of Burbank High School’s lady bulldogs water polo team. From what I was told, she wasn’t thrilled with whatever choices the school was offering for the back of the jacket, so her father hired me to create a custom image.

I worked up my own version of a bulldog, kept it tough and formidable and yet added elements of femininity to represent the team of ladies who would deliver water polo justice to their competitors.

And yes, this was for use on just ONE jacket. She has a very nice father.

Bulldog design
Here is the original design done in five colors – black, white, pink, and two shades of blue. The dark blue background was just a placeholder for the dark blue color of the actual jacket onto which this would be embroidered.

Here is the final design as embroidered on the back of the letterman jacket. I was fairly pleased with it, though a little annoyed that they eliminated the black outline from the water that was intended to be there.

Batman Day

According to every third post on Facebook this week, apparently we had a Batman Day. (The other two thirds of the posts were about Comic Con and cats.) I was not aware we had a holiday to celebrate Batman, so I seem to have missed it.

I like Batman, so I want in on the celebration. I took a little time to reimagine the Dark Knight as someone who enjoyed the luxuries of his fame a little too much. By the time Bruce Wayne reached middle age, he probably was a little soft around the middle, needed glasses, and got to the point where he just didn’t care about shaving. The fact that this version slightly resembles me is in no way my fantasy of hurling myself through the night to rescue citizens in distress with cool gadgets while wearing an unwieldy cape. If I were to do that, I would go without the cowl and take all the credit as Chadman.

Chadman
See, this is why I DO NOT cosplay. The costume wouldn’t look right, and I’d probably be going around trying to save London instead of Gotham.

Well, enjoy (or enjoyed) Batman Day. I have to run. Some spotlight in the sky just got my attention…
