2021 Monster Month: Monsters At Work

Well here’s something different in this month-o’-monsters – an actual bonafide monster job! Back in July I was hired to work on this advertisement for the Disney+ animated series Monsters At Work.

The agency had already written the ad, and another wonderful artist had illustrated it and laid it out (that means the graphic design part of it), but then two things happened: 1. it went through changes, and 2. the other artist had to go out of town and didn’t have the time to make the changes. So, I filled in as needed.

So, what you see here is a true team effort. I illustrated all the characters except three monsters in step 5 and Mike Wazowski (which are all by the talented Liz Masters), and then I re-laid out the steps and bottom info with all the new text following the look that Liz had already established. It was a super fun gig, and obviously I love drawing monsters. Happy to have had a crack at the Disney/Pixar creation all thanks to Liz for pulling me in on it!

Oh, and Disney+ tweeted this out back in July just a few days after I had finished it. Quick turnaround to meet the launch date of the new show!

2021 Monster Month: Daydreamer

Well, it’s Wednesday. Are you hitting that time in the week where your eyes are glazing over staring at the computer screen you are working on? Are you wondering when the weekend will finally get here? When you will feel the sweet release of freedom?

Hey, every job has its exciting and boring moments. Just imagine the guard standing at his post with nothing to do but keeping an eye out for intruders. But then a butterfly comes along to distract him, causing him to daydream about flitting off himself to a place of deeper personal fulfillment.

Well, technically the butterfly is an intruder.

2021 Monster Month: Grease Monkey

When traveling the galaxy and you’re having engine trouble, hopefully there’s a planet nearby with a garage full of these little guys. They can fix just about anything that comes fluttering and sputtering into their repair docks.

This guy really knows his blarganches from his fleefborgs.

2021 Monster Month: What the Dickens?!

This one was fun to do. In my brown paper sketchbook, I let my pencil wonder what a monster in the time of Charles Dickens might look like.

I generally start with a light pencil line made with either red or blue pencil lead, then I inked it. Added some white gouache for a little dimension this time with the brown paper handling the midtones, and then a little brown paint for shadows and a hint of yellow in the eye. And before Jacob Marley can come calling with his chains, you’ve got yourself a Dickens monster!

Looks like Ebeneezer Scrooge could certainly make short work of a Christmas goose with those teeth.

2021 Monster Month: Whaaaaaa?!

Whaaaa?! is right! Did you realize Monster Month is back, and it started yesterday? Well it is and it did!

Here is the exciting second piece, a completely traditional watercolor and colored pencil piece of a dumbfounded beast who is just as surprised to be here as you are in seeing him.

You’d be shocked, too, if you just found out that your whole existence was due to some guy’s blog. Who even reads blogs anymore?!

Serious Malarky

Some days it’s appropriate to just remain serious.

Green Eggs Season 2 Is Coming!

Anyone out there a fan of Netflix’s Green Eggs & Ham show?

I just found out that season 2 will drop on November 5th of this year! (Thanks for the news, IMDB.com!) It’s hard to believe, but it has already been TWO YEARS since I finished my time working on the season 2 story team. I’m pretty excited to see what the crew has been working on since I left!

In my excitement, I did a new watercolor & colored pencil piece of Sam I Am and Guy Am I.

Sam I Am and Guy Am I are gearing up for a whole new adventure! I could tell you all about it, but then what’s the fun in spoilers?!

I Love A Parade

His was the gift of music and an uninhibited personality.

I’d say he marches to the beat of just one drum, but he’s only got a horn. But WHAT a horn!

If you live here in the States, I hope you are able to get out there to celebrate Independence Day today by going to a parade! Even if that means it’s a one-man horn player marching down the street to his own tune.

And yes, I mean today. When the 4th falls on a Sunday, the holiday is generally recognized in most areas on the Monday after.

I really liked how this one turned out. It’s a traditionally inked drawing from my sketchbook that was colored in Photoshop. Below are a few close-ups so you can enjoy some of the texture of the piece!
