I love classic TV shows. Probably because I love the innocence in them. Of course, I had to go and mess around with the innocence of Andy Griffith‘s iconic Mayberry show to include it here for Monster Month! Now whistle the theme song in a minor key when viewing today’s post to completely set the ominous monster mood!

Today is the grand unveiling of the winner of the Cartoon Caption Contest that has been taking place over on the Chad Frye • Illustration Guy Fan Page on Facebook over the past two weeks. Many folks submitted their ideas for what this illustration could be saying, I chose 5 of the best, and then left it up to the fans to vote for which one should win!
Congratulations to Charlie Eldred for his winning caption! To the other four finalists, Robert Bowman, Edward Murphy, Preston Jones and Matthew Schnittker, thank you for your great contributions!
Charlie has won a nice print of this drawing with his own caption that includes a sketch on it by me, along with a signed copy of my children’s book Jonah and the Very Big Fish.
Thank you to all who participated. Come join the Fan Page where other contests will be held in the future!
That’s “Wonder” as in “I wonder what that thing could possibly be?”
Well, whatever it is, it sure is red, it looks a little ornery, and it’s wearing a blue cape. All I can say is that you go say “hi” first.
And if you have been keeping track of the Monster Cartoon Caption Contest over on the Chad Frye • Illustration Guy Fan Page on Facebook, you might like to know that five captions have been chosen out of all the entries and are now ready for your votes! You know, whether scaring or eating little children, most monsters use their teeth quite often. And whether it’s a crooked snarl, or just a bad overbite, the sensible monster realizes he really needs to take care of his pearly whites. After all, one must think of the children in such situations – this is all for them.
When a gurgling, belching beast has need of such care, he turns to the trusty ORTHODONTIST. To take on a job such as this, the medical professional needs to be a person of quiet temperament and not easily intimidated. Their skill with odd-shaped teeth and the ability to withstand unfathomable stench is paramount. And they need to make sure the patient is well-stocked with the proper insurance.
And if you aren’t aware, TODAY is the last day to enter the monster themed Comic Caption Contest being held on the Chad Frye * Illustration Guy Fan Page on Facebook. The contest is completely FREE, and the deadline to enter is 11:59pm TONIGHT! (That’s California time, by the way!) So, come to the Fan Page and get your funny captions in so you can have a try at winning the prize!
Every brave creature that ever rode into battle in tales of the fantastic did so on the back of an even more brave creature known as the NOBLE STEED.
This beast of burden knows his duty is to selflessly carry his master into the storm of ferocity in order to achieve the goal for the greater good. He knows not of the political differences that brought them to this place of conflict. He knows only of the fact that his master has need of the steed’s unique abilities.
So, with blind devotion, he does what is required without any expectation of being written of fondly in the pages of history, er – fantasy.
Today’s monster-of-the-day isn’t really too monstrous. He’s actually a bit more happy-go-lucky. Of course, if he were a real dragon approaching me, I’d probably run in terror despite all he probably would really want is a hug. Hope you enjoy this little fella as much as I did drawing him!
More MONSTERS yet to come! Come visit again tomorrow!
This guy may be little, but is quite unafraid to attack with his lightning quick speed and bee-like reflexes. He can be a bit mischievously impulsive at times, much like a 4-year-old feeling their oats. If you see one, DO NOT take him home as a pet.
What could possibly terrify a big, burly MONSTER? This is a question I ask myself often when doodling. This past summer I was sitting on the beach in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, when that very thought struck my mind. Together with the inspiration of the location, this sketch of a monster afraid of the water just emerged!
Well, it started as a sketch – today’s dose of monster was really just an ink sketch in my sketchbook drawn on the East coast, then it was colored here in California turning it into a genuine illustration. So, this piece is truly bi-coastal! Originally I was just going to splash some color on it in Photoshop, but as you can see, it blossomed into a full-fledged digital painting. Enjoy!
And if you happen to see any monsters on the beach, just know that they aren’t there to cause any trouble. They just want to have fun in the sand and surf, too!
